Challenges for Electronics in Heavy-Duty Applications
Rapid Pressure Equalization
Changing weather patterns, altitude changes and the machinery’s heating/cooling cycles directly affect the internal pressure of a sealed enclosure. The resulting overpressure or vacuum can lead to a pressure differential as high as 350 mbar (5 psi). Such pressure changes can put the housing seal under extreme stress, eventually causing it to fail and allowing liquids and other contaminants to enter.
Preventing Condensation
Moisture can be drawn inside an outdoor electrical box by diffusion – the process by which vapor passes by natural molecular motion through the walls of a polymer enclosure. When water vapor enters a sealed enclosure and has no way to escape, it will condense to a liquid state. Third-party research has shown this is more damaging than rain because condensation remains on the surface. Thus, condensation causes corrosion that can degrade sensitive electronics inside the housing, leading to field failures.
