High emissions

When it comes to particulate emissions, your filter bags are your last line of defense. If they underperform, not only do you risk hefty fines for non-compliance, your social license to operate is also under threat.

But not all dust filtration bags are created equal – and their performance is also affected by how you decide to manage their upkeep. Do you carry out total filter bag replacements once every few years – resulting in a large, irregular expense, but more reliable, lower emissions? Or do you opt for lower, regular costs by changing just a small percentage of the filter bags each year, and put up with reduced filter performance?

High differential pressure

High differential pressure occurs as particulate builds up within the filter fabric. As the bags become clogged, they are more resistant to airflow, and so you end up increasing fan power to try to push air through the system. The result, of course, is higher energy costs and an increased carbon footprint. High dp commonly occurs when:

• Upward airflow velocity between the filter bags (known as the lift velocity) is too high for the given bulk density of the specific dust being filtered in that baghouse, or;
• Poor membrane integrity allows dust to plug the filter substrate, e.g. polyester felt or fiberglass.

Frequent bag changes

Short bag life causes higher than expected replacement costs and can put you at risk of exceeding emissions limits.

There are a number of reasons why your dust filtration bag might fail earlier than expected, including:

• Stress during cleaning/pulsing, particularly when pulsing frequently
• High-velocity (above 750 m/min) dusty gas causing abrasion of the membrane and filter bag.
• Holes in the filter bag, which allow dust to pass through to the clean side of the baghouse and out through the stack – a problem that may require immediate attention.

Sub-optimal production rates

Underperforming filter bags limit capacity through the baghouse, which has a knock-on effect on overall plant productivity. For some plants, their baghouse can be the biggest obstacle to increasing throughput – and that just shouldn’t be the case.
