What Is IP and Why Does My Digital Signage Need It?

IP, short for Ingress Protection, is an internationally accepted standard for indicating how well electronic equipment, devices or components are protected against solid objects and liquids.

High IP ratings are commonly considered important for outdoor digital signage application, but indoor and semi-outdoor units should also be ingress-protected to prevent corrosion and electrical shortcut – for maximum uptime and lifespan.

IP65: The Appropriate Level of Ingress Protection Your Digital Signage Really Needs

IP Rating Format

The first digit indicates the level of protection against the foreign solid objects whereas the second digit indicates the protection level against the ingress of liquids.

IP6X

Highest level of protection against air pollution, dust and diesel particles, salt, ocean spray and other solid objects.

IPX5

In most cases, an IP rating of X5 is more than sufficient, reliably protecting your digital signage from low-pressure water jets indicated by IPX5 from all directions: heavy rains or extensive cleaning are no problem.

IPX8

IPX8 rating protects against continuous immersion in water but does not withstand high-pressure spray as defined by IPX6. This protection is rarely ever needed for digital signage enclosures.

IP68

IP68 is a rating you can find very often for components like screens, but it’s rarely needed for the entire enclosure.

IP65

Unlike standard filter technologies, GORE Direct Air Cooling ensures an IP65 rating for the whole enclosure instead of single components, making it the only choice for outdoor and semi-outdoor application. There usually is no need for higher IP ratings for digital signage enclosures.
