Gore Tackles Tough Biopharma Challenge
Have you ever dropped your new phone and cracked the screen? It’s never a good feeling to lose something of value. Now imagine if that something was worth thousands to millions of dollars and had the potential to change lives. That’s what drug manufacturers stand to lose if a single-use bulk drug storage bag — holding biologic substances — is damaged. A new solution from Gore addresses this issue.
Biologic drugs are the fastest growing segment of the pharmaceutical market with global sales expected, by some estimates, to top $330 billion by 2022. They treat such complex conditions as cancer and autoimmune disease and can be expensive and challenging to manufacture and deliver.
Single-use containers are used to transport and store bulk drug substance, the active ingredient in some biologic therapies. These containers are filled with substance, frozen and then shipped to their final destination where they are further processed into drug products. The problem: traditional plastic storage containers can become brittle and break easily if mishandled after freezing at low temperatures, making the contents unusable. Additionally, impurities in traditional plastic packaging are a concern because they could affect sensitive biologics.
The GORE® STA-PURE™ Flexible Freeze Container is designed to address these problems. Commercialized in the U.S. and Europe, the product remains strong and durable after freezing at -86C (-123F) and has a low extractables profile.
